Chapter 14

Thursday arrives and I crumple the mysterious note into the palms of my hand as Natalia and I sit on the first-floor balcony of the clubhouse. I’ve put together the perfect plan and now, I only have to see it through. Natalia’s not really happy about it, but she’ll help me out.

“Right,” I tell her. “So, you’re sure you’ve got everything?”

“Yes, we’ll drive into the city with Olivero. We’ll park somewhere close, where we can still see you. You’ll go to the stall at the marketplace and text me an update when you get the next clue. Then we’ll decide how best to proceed with everything?”

“I’ll have to be super discreet,” I say. “Do you think I’ll need a disguise?”

“I think you’re getting carried away,” laughs Natalia. “But it’s probably best if you don’t look like a Devaro. Did you throw away your old jeans and t-shirts?”

“Why would I do that?” I ask.

Natalia shrugs. “Just wear those ok. I don’t like this one bit, but I rather tail you than let you attempt this all on your own.”

We quieten instantly as Matthew opens the sliding door and steps out onto the balcony. “What are you two up to so early?” he asks suspiciously.

“Just hanging out,” Natalia says curtly. She’s still a little angry with him over the whole dinner party fiasco.

“Right,” Matthew says. “Do you need Paulo or Val for anything?” he asks me. I shake my head, and he steps back inside and disappears down the stairs. I had seen a flicker of his more human side last night, a person with actual feelings, who has bad days and experiences disappointments too. But today he’s back to being utterly unbothered, in control and disinterested.

Later that afternoon, my heart starts thudding against my chest as we pull up a short distance away from the marketplace. Olivero had looked strained during the drive here, perhaps a little wary of all the whispering Natalia and I had been doing. Like all of the Devaro’s core staff, he functions as a chauffeur/security detail/general errand runner all rolled into one.

“Remember,” says Natalia, she’s so quiet that I can barely hear her. “If ANYTHING seems even just a little bit off, or if you think you’re in any danger, even for a second, get out of there, or call me for help ok?”

“Yes ok fine, and you just stay put,” I whisper back. “I have to look like I’ve come alone. Whatever you do, do not follow me. If I need help, I’ll let you know...I promise.”

Natalia looks deeply troubled but I give her a reassuring smile and hop out of the car.

I have no idea of what I’m walking into, or who I might meet, but I brace myself and navigate through the colorful array of stalls until I find the one that’s marked No. 18. There’s nothing special about it at all, it comprises a table that’s covered in little boxes of oven-roasted vegetables and a jovial, elderly lady sits behind it.

“Buon pomeriggio, Signora,” I tell the lady, greeting her politely.
